Trenton Harris - Study Abroad - Rome - Week 1

Wow, what a week! I just wrapped up my first week in Rome, Italy. It's safe to say that the experience has lived up to the expectations so far! Here is a rundown of my first week:

The trip all began at XNA airport. I met up with a few of my roommates in the airport as we prepared for the long flights ahead. We had a connecting flight in Philadelphia before the final flight to FCO Rome Airport. I tried my best to get some sleep on the flights because it was an overnight flight, but I ended up unfortunately not getting much sleep. I unfortunately learned jet lag is a real thing! After the long flights, we finally landed in Rome, and it was time to explore the wonderful city!

It took me about two days to recover from my jet lag. Those first two days were long, drowsy days, but once they passed, I was back to being myself and ready to explore! We went to a few small restaurants around our apartment, hoping to find a good place to come back to in the next few weeks. It turns out there is a restaurant directly below our apartment that is wonderful. The owner was very friendly, and the food was delicious! We will definitely be going back soon.

Classes have been going great so far! I am taking Engineering Economics and Basic Course in the Arts at the University of Arkansas Rome Center. The campus is beautiful! It is like a small palace we get to visit each week. For Art this week, we visited the Capitoline Museum. It was very interesting! Our professor is Italian and taught us about the history of some of the artwork and sculptures. I am excited to learn more about Rome and its history. Classes are long, but I will definitely get used to it soon. I was able to wrap up my homework for the week in the library on campus. The library is small, but cozy. I think I will spend a lot of time there, just like how I do back in Fayetteville. Week 1 classes were a success!

The engineering program went on a tour around Campo Marzio, which is one of the oldest areas and the main historical parts of Rome. My favorite part of the tour was visiting the Pantheon, the largest unsupported dome in the world. Learning about the history of Rome is extremely interesting and part of the reason I decided to come to Rome to study abroad.
